Summer Sounds 2018 Mixtape Series Credits




During the summer of 2018, in partnership with VISIT PHILADELPHIA, the Philadelphia Jazz Project, presented 90 FREE performances in 45 days in Philadelphia's, historic Old City District. From Friday, June 1 through Friday, September 7, 2018, five different Philadelphia musical ensembles, each presented concerts for three weeks. Luckily for all of us, we recorded some of this great music and we can continue to enjoy it today through this series of six FREE mixtapes.

Old City Sax Quartet

 

OLD CITY SAX QUARTET

 

The Old City Sax Quartet (OCSQ) is a newly formed ensemble. Pulled together for this special concert series, this group consists of master reedman, Derrick El: alto sax, Terry Lawson: tenor sax, Elliot Levin: soprano & tenor sax and Tim Price: baritone sax. Between them, they demonstrate over 150 years of musical experience within this group. Summer Sounds In The Historic District provided us with the opportunity to experience this special group.

Josh Lee

 

JOSH LEE TRIO

 

Josh Lee is a multi-instrumentalist who specializes in soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxopones. Lee holds two degrees from Temple University's - Boyer College of Music. In 2018, he joined the legendary Count Basie Orchestra and performs with them around the world. He also performs regualrly with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Delfeayo Marsalis, the Upton Jazz Orchestra and Terell Stafford’s Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia. Josh Lee is co-founder of Jazz Lives Philadelphia.

Tim Price

 

TIM PRICE TRIO

 

Tim Price is a saxophonist, educator and composer from Reading, Pennsylvania. He teaches jazz saxophone at the New School University in New York City. For over 18 years, Price's writing on jazz has appeared regularly in the Saxophone Journal. During his career, Price has performed with musicians like Bennie Green, Lew Tabackin, Ray Drummond, Don Patterson, Bill Doggett and many others. Tim Price performs and facilitates music clinics around the globe.

BIG BRASS 4TET

 

Big Brass 4tet is an ensemble formed expressly for this Pop-Up concert series. The members of this group are composers who write their own music and are all leaders of their own groups. Summer Sounds In The Historic District provides us with the opportunity to experience this special group. Big Brass 4tet consists of Rob H. Henderson - drums, Dan Nosheny - tuba/sousaphone, Frank Rein - trombone and Koof ibi Umoren - trumpet & flugelhorn.

VICTOR NORTH GROUP

 

Victor North is a tenor saxophonist and composer, who migrated south from Alaska to Philadelphia to immerse himself in our rich jazz culture. Since his arrival, he’s worked with Mickey Roker, Charles Fambrough, John Swana, Terell Stafford, Jimmy Bruno, Duane Eubanks, Elio Villafranca, Orrin Evans and and for nearly 15 years has collaborated with organist, Lucas Brown, who together, with drummer, Wayne Smith Jr. comprised the modern organ trio, Three Blind Mice.
