21 Soul Sessions

21 Soul Sessions is a monthly residency at the World Café Live. 21 Soul Sessions presents an emerging family of young and talented musicians in Jazz and beyond, hosted by RC Williams featuring a rotating cast of Ropeadope artists from Dallas, New York, and Philly. Exhausted by the decline in today’s media and the lack of quality outlets available to musicians, Ropeadope CEO Louis H. Marks launched a new media brand - 21Soul - whose purpose is to deliver straightforward, quality content directly to music listeners and creators. With Ropeadope’s 17,000 Youtube subscribers and 40,000 person mailing list as a base, Ropeadope introduced a new media venture, 21Soul.  21Soul Sessions will bring this rich media stew to the stage monthly in FREE concerts on the second Thursday of every month.

What is Ropeadope?

Ropeadope, the independent record label known for developing a collaborative family of musicians in Jazz and beyond, teams up with World Café Live to break new ground in musical exploration. Dubbed The 21Soul Sessions to reflect the label’s new music media platform, the events will be hosted by RC Williams (Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg), whose epic DFW Jam Sessions have been a staple of the Dallas scene for years and have featured guests like Mos Def, Leon Bridges, Common, and James Poyser.

As Ropeadope celebrates their 20th anniversary in 2019, The 21Soul Sessions will expand to New York, Montreal and other select cities, with Philly as the birthplace of this new celebration of independence.

Ropeadope is an independent record label known for groundbreaking releases in Jazz, Latin, and Electronic music, and has become a vibrant hub for progressive artists like Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Terrace Martin, Eddie Palmieri, RC Williams, and many more. The label has released over 400 recordings to date with each artist retaining full creative control. 21Soul is a new media platform from the label that features live performances and recordings, educational and social interest videos, and podcast interviews with musicians.

Lamont Caldwell -  There isn’t one genre that can contain performer, multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Lamont Caldwell. He has played saxophone with greats in jazz, r&b and hip hop. From Jay-Z, the Roots to Dave Matthews Band and Bilal. Lamont has also played guitar and sung on several recordings all while leading his rock band MACH22 with whom he has opened for some impressive artists such as Slash, Ace Frehley, Guns N’ Roses and even Bon Jovi.

Anu Sun - Anu Sun is a Grammy Award winning musician/engineer & songwriter. On top of that, the Las Vegas native has credits with legends like Johnny Cash and Miles Davis. Now, however, is the distinct moment that Anu steps out with his first project in 8 years with his album release titled Sanguine Regum, a move that is certain to place him with his peers as a more prominent, provocative renaissance musician.

PJP spoke with Fabian Brown about music, 21 Soul Sessions and RopeaDope.

PJP: Tell us a little about yourself and Ropeadope.

Fabian Brown: 20+ years in the music industry I've spent time on the stage, in the studio, paying it forward in the classroom and advocating for our roster of artists at Ropeadope. If I'm not spending time with my wife and our 10 amazing kids, or building my brand and businesses, I'm doing everything I can to push our artists music and message forward. We are just excited.

PJP: Can you tell us a little about the new 21 Soul Sessions?

Fabian Brown: This upcoming 21 Soul Sessions is going to be something else. While our host RC Williams is on the road, we are kicking off 2019 with a special treat. January's host, Anu Sun and The Shed All-Stars, are pulling up from NYC and bringing their bi-weekly jam session from Harlem to Philly. Anu will premiere some of his new music from his upcoming album, Sanguine Regum. When you add Lamont Caldwell and Cvgebird to the mix, it's going to be a night of heading nodding people won't forget.

PJP: Tell us some more about the upcoming event[s] and the people working with you.

Fabian Brown: Without giving it all away, I would encourage people to stay tuned to our curated cast of Ropeadope artists. Month after month, you just never know who will pop in. Musicians and Artists are always encouraged to bring the instruments and chops to add to the vibe.

PJP: We at PJP know how difficult taking on this important work can be. There's always something else to do. What kinds of support can the community give to help with the effort and its ongoing success?

Fabian Brown: Come out, hang and bring your friends.

PJP: Why Jazz? When you could be doing anything else, why Jazz?

Fabian Brown: Because of the amazing dedication and commitment that Jazz artists bring to the world. We work for them out of simple respect.

Philly Jazz Quotes

Jazz is a phenomenon. …it's an element that was created that almost lacks definition. Because it's endless.
