Welcome to Philadelphia Jazz Project

Jazz Month

It's April. Jazz Appreciation Month. There are all kinds of things happening this month by many of the city's organizations and groups. Philadelphia Jazz Project thought that the call to just appreciate Jazz falls a little short. We'd love for Philadelphians to show some love.

  • You can start by checking out our Local Jazz page.
  • You can visit Jazz Near You.
  • You can go out and see some live Jazz music.
  • You can go out and purchase some Jazz music, CDs, or MP3s.
  • And by all means, bring family, a friend or a colleague out with you.

To do our part, we're presenting four events this month.

Listening Party #2 takes place on Friday, April 12th at 6:30pm at the Performance Garage, 1515 Brandywine Street. Hosted by WRTI's J.Michael Harrison and featuring great, new CDs by Philadelphia's finest Jazz musicians, that we bet you probably haven't heard. Good music. Refreshments. Great crowd. FREE ADMISSION. You don't wanna miss this!

Then, on Friday, April 19th at 7:30pm, we present the first of 4 concerts at the Clef Club. We present vocalist, TC III & company featuring special guest, saxophonist, James Spaulding. The opening act for the evening is trumpeter, Daud El Bakara and his ensemble.

On Tuesday, April 23rd at 6:30pm, we present a Community Conversation at the Gershman Y, 401 South Broad Street. The topic is Jazz Dance & Jazz Music" A Shotgun Divorce. Our guest panelists include: Dr. Brenda Dixon-Gottschild, Germaine Ingram and Dr. Guy Ramsey.

We close out our Jazz Month activities on Friday, April 23rd at 7:30pm, with another Clef Club concert featuring master drummer, Lucky Thompson and his group. The opening act for the evening is vocal phenomenon, Suzanne Burgess and her ensemble.

All of these events are FREE OF CHARGE.

However, you must RSVP by sending an email message to rsvp@philajazzproject.org.

Least we forget, the two gentlemen in the Love Philly Jazz photo above; Daud El Bakara, and Korey Riker. You can win a 30 minute performance by this talented duo in your home. For details, click on the Love banner in the right side bar or right here.

Enjoy Jazz month and remember, Show Some Love!

Philly Jazz Quotes

The stuff McCoy Tyner did was earth-shattering for me. The modal thing, the way he voiced chords in fourths, the way he used the pentatonic scale -- all those things were very new.
