On the day of John Coltrane’s birth, after the Jazz Walk - Vigil, we continue our birthday celebration of his 91st birthday, with a concert by the Odean Pope Quartet featuring Philadelphia legend, friend of John Coltrane and BNY Mellon Jazz 2017 Living Legacy Award recipient, Odean Pope - tenor sax; along with Gloria Galante - harp, Lee Smith - bass, Alan Nelson - drums at the historic Hatfield House. Be sure to bring a lightweight portable chair, or a blanket. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and consider a jacket as it can get chilly this time of year. Come ready to enjoy music and nature in the park that John Coltrane took strolls in.

Born in North Carolina in 1938, Odean Pope relocated to Philadelphia and becasme assiociated with John Coltrane and Jymie Merritt. Pope began his music career performing with Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and James Brown, frequently at Philadelphia’s Uptown Theater.  In the 1960s, Pope performed with Jimmy McGriff and Max Roach, building a strong relationship with the latter that led to decades of international touring and recording. In the late-1970s, Pope formed Catalyst, a funk-infused jazz quartet with Philadelphia-based musicians Eddie Green, Sherman Ferguson and Alphonso Johnson. While continuing as a soloist with Roach, in the early-1980s, Pope began working more as a band leader, most notably with Odean Pope Saxophone Choir and Odean Pope Trio.
