Jazz Walk - Vigil

Music. At Mander Recreation Center / Fairmount Park , 33rd and Diamond Streets, Philadelphia, PA 19121, Philadelphia. United states.

On the day of John Coltrane’s birth, this Jazz Walk will feature a stroll from Mander Recreation Center at 33rd and Diamond Streets down to the historic Hatfield House at 33rd and Girard Avenue. Along the way, the strollers will encounter a number of saxophone ensembles who will share their musical tributes to John Coltrane and join in on the stroll. Inspired by the second line tradition of West Africa and New Orleans, where mourners are transformed into celebrants, this Vigil solemnly and jubilantly celebrates John Coltrane’s 91st Birthday.

Our Vigil is not in protest. It is not to mark a sorrowful murder. This Vigil is to honor and celebrate a life... a life filled with music: John Coltrane's life. In this walk, stroll, march, we participants, carrying electric candles will be led, pied-piper like, by a growing team of saxophonists. The participating saxophonists include: The Epoché Quartet w/ Jack Saint Claire, Josh Lee, Chris Oatts and Dylan Principi, Larry Price, Derrick El, Lynn Riley, Bobby Zankel and Odean Pope.

The event closes with a concert by the Odean Pope Quartet at the historic Hatfield House. Be sure to bring a lightweight portable chair, or a blanket. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and consider a jacket as it can get chilly this time of year. Come ready to enjoy music and nature in the park that John Coltrane took strolls in.
