Welcome to Philadelphia Jazz Project

Free Jazz Month Book Raffle 2018

30 Days Book Raffle 2018The Philadelphia Jazz Project and Books & Stuff are collaborating again during April 2018, Jazz Appreciation Month to encourage reading. According to a 2009 report from the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board, more than half of Philadelphia adults don’t have the literacy and work skills necessary to “compete in our knowledge-based economy or to successfully complete a postsecondary degree.” We all must find ways to make reading an increased part of our interactions with others.

We encourage reading about some of the intriguing and colorful characters of Jazz music. We're talking about artists like Thelonious Monk, Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington whose stories make for great reading and probably exciting films. We in Philadelphia should know that our city has been a special site for some amazing talents and peculiar personalities as well, folks like Dizzy Gillespie, Rufus Harley, Lee Morgan, Billie Holiday, Jef Lee Johnson, Grover Washington Jr., Nina Simone, Pearl Bailey, Sun Ra and more.

So, to spread the word, each Friday in April, we will raffle off Two Adult and Two Children's Jazz-related books. It's FREE and open to the public. Anyone 18 years of age, or older, living in the Delaware Valley can enter.

Philly Jazz Quotes

The stuff McCoy Tyner did was earth-shattering for me. The modal thing, the way he voiced chords in fourths, the way he used the pentatonic scale -- all those things were very new.
