A Different Guide To Philly

Wildsam Field Guide Cover

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”       — Ibn Battuta (12th Century Moroccan scholar & explorer)

This month, travel guide publisher, Wildsam added to their series of urban field guides by releasing a unique guide to Philadelphia. Launched in 2012, Wildsam is a series of American field guides. Equal parts travel guide and tribute, each field guide contains creative prose, personal essays, hand-drawn maps, interviews, and local lore about the subject city.

AccordWildsam Flyering its lore, the company holds three central beliefs — in the power of roots, honesty and story. People want authenticity. They want to experience and feel connected to a place, but not like tourists. Travelers are interested in the full story, from the broad strokes right down to the mundane detail, which pulls them in.

Wildsam field guides help travelers encounter cities, regions and historical landmarks as if they were locals, getting knee-deep into the culture and cuisine of the place. Each painstakingly-researched guide includes particulars on key sights, stories and interviews with local figures, and where to find the best grubs and other goodies.

They have already published are guides for cities like, Chicago, Seattle, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Atlanta, Charleston, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Portland, San Francisco, San Antonio, Detroit and New Orleans. Now Philly gets to stomp with the big dawgs!!

TWildsam - Public Arthe new Philadelphia guide features strong contributions by some intriguing Philadelphians, including illustrations by visual artist Derick Jones, essays by writers Feminista Jones, Sara Nović and PJP contributor and music journalist, John Morrison who shares an interview with Philadelphia Jazz Project director, Homer Jackson.

Getting a guided tour of places and things in Philly from the distinct perspective of a diverse group of dauntless Philadelphians is indeed gonna be educational and a damn good trip. Yes, even for those of us who have lived here our entire lives. If you are open to seeing the city with new eyes, or if you've never even visited our loud, proud and phunky home town, consider this guide as your map.

Philly Jazz Quotes

The stuff McCoy Tyner did was earth-shattering for me. The modal thing, the way he voiced chords in fourths, the way he used the pentatonic scale -- all those things were very new.
