Workshop Details: Male or female singers from beginners through seasoned professionals will acquire skills in this hands-on workshop led by Philadelphia's Ella Gahnt, jazz vocalist. Gahnt, accompanied by pianist Kendrah Butler, will lead a workshop inspired by the teaching approach of Jazz great Barry Harris. “This will essentially be a real-world situation where we go over what we have to do to have a successful sit-in-like sitting in with a band at a club,” shares Gahnt.
Workshop participants will gain skills including:
o how to communicate with a band
o how to count off more effectively to different music styles
o helpful cues and signals to use in directing a band, and
o how to translate your vision for a song to the band.
Vocalists who would like to sing must bring sheet music or a chord chart, or prepare to sing a “head tune” and know the key of the song they are singing.
Facilitator: Ella Gahnt has been dubbed “Philly’s Class Act” by local media and fans. After years as a session R & B singer, Ms. Gahnt has been focusing since the mid-80s on jazz vocal performance and recording, performing at the city and region’s main venues. Currently, she performs regularly with her own trio/quartet, with Nasir Dickerson & the Renaissance Messengers, with The Clef Club Community Jazz Big Band, and as featured vocalist with the Philadelphia Legends of Jazz Orchestra. Look out for the Elegant Ella Gahnt - she’s “traveling at the speed of swing.”
