Workshop Details:

Male or female singers from beginners through seasoned professionals will acquire skills in this hands-on workshop led by Philadelphia's own Barbara Montgomery, multi-faceted performer & music industry executive.

Montgomery will lead a workshop which includes:

o How to protect your music/lyrics/arrangements
o Affiliation with performing rights society (e.g. BMI/ASCAP)
          o Publishing company basics
o How money is made in the digital music world, and
o Where do royalties come from?

Most of us have heard the tragic stories of world famous musicians who have lost everything, ending their lives in poverty. We may think that is in the past; however, the 21st century digital world makes it even more difficult to retain control of creative output, let alone make a living from it. Attend this workshop and learn what you need to do to help make a living with music.

Facilitator: Barbara Montgomery has had a multi-faceted career as a performing and recording artist, music industry executive, music producer and publisher, as well as working in production for film and television. She began performing as a jazz vocalist, but took a detour in her music career by joining the NBC/Westinghouse television station that produced the "Mike Douglas Show." This provided the gift of working with jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett and many others. Montgomery has produced six CDs of her own, arranging and writing original material for four of them, in collaboration with musicians like Steve Giordano, Barry Sames and Aaron Graves. Her CDs “Little Sunflower” and “Trinity” were honored with the Blue Chip Award for Best Jazz Vocals by Dr. Herb Wong of the International Association of Jazz Educators.

Philly Jazz Quotes

On my first record with him, I used no notes, just sound... I never played as powerfully as I did with Sunny Murray... he plays pulse, not beats.
