Barnes FoundationPhiladelphia Jazz Project Presents Five Cool Performances To Beat The Heat!!


On Thursday afternoons, from July19th to August 16th, PJP Presents Five Cool Performances Outside At The Barnes Foundation. Most important these events are FREE of charge.


Bring a lunch and enjoy the music.

About The Performers:

 

July 19 | Saxophonist Larry Price and percussionist Karen Smith

 

Larry Price - Karen Smith

Karen Smith is a percussionist, playwright, director, producer and poet based in Philadelphia. She is also leader of two musical groups: Weez The Peeple and Sistahs Laying Down Hands With Love.

 

Larry Price is a Philadelphia-based alto saxophonist, vocalist, arranger, composer, and producer, with one foot deeply planted in the blues and gospel sounds of his North Carolina roots and the other foot firmly grounded into the adventurous realms of jazz's avant-garde.

 

 

July 26 | Drummer Doug Hirlinger and saxophonist Andrew Pereira

 

Doug Hirlinger & Andrew Pereira

Doug Hirlinger is a percussionist and composer based in Philadelphia and interested in intersections between technology, activism, improvisation, and sound/music. He recently completed an artist residency at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts resulting in a 10-piece suite exploring gentrification, inequality, race, and musical legacy in Philadelphia with collaborators Ursula Rucker, M’Balia Singley, Tim Motzer and John Swana.  

 

Andrew Pereira is a saxophonist, composer and bandleader who has established himself as an in-demand instrumentalist, backing up world-renowned performers and collaborating with some of the finest up-and-coming musicians in the jazz world.

 

 

August 2 | Percussionist Kevin Diehl and flautist Brother Wali with Richard Robinson

 

Kevin Diehl & Wali Bickley

Kevin Diehl is a Philadelphia-based drummer, percussionist and composer and founding member of The Willow Trio and The Sonic Liberation Front [SLF]. SLF has worked with Marshall Allen, Odean Pope, Billy Bang, Sunny Murray, Kulu Mele African Dance Ensemble, Oliver Lake and Members of the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra.

 

William "Brother Wali" Bickley is a world class flautist, composer, poet and playwright. This multi-disciplinary artist facilitates ‘The Arts Group’ started for the purpose of exploring the therapeutic effect of the arts and the coupling of music and the stage, to enhance both dialogue and music.

 

Diehl and Bickley are joined by educator, folklorist and musician, Richard Robinson. He has worked extensively with children throughout the tri-state area in schools and community organizations, where he passes on the traditional values of African and Caribbean Creole culture.

 

 

August 9 | Saxophonist Lynn Riley and ensemble

 

Lynn Riley

Lynn Riley is a jazz musician, composer, and educator, whose primary instruments are saxophone and flute. Lynn has been described more than once as "Superwoman" of the sax. She has played with Lynn has performed with many great artists like Grover Washington Jr., Philly Joe Jones, Rachelle Farrell, Charles Earland, Gerald Veasley, Marian McPartland, Shirley Scott, Emily Remler, David Murray and Blossom Dearie.

 

 

August 16 | The Three Bones - trombonists Dan Blacksberg, Frank Rein, Connor Przybyszewski

 

The Three Bones

The Three Bones is a trio of creatively frisky brass explorers. Not afraid to take things back to the old days of trombone majesty, this collective's skill sets include deep research and performance in the worlds of Orchestral/Classical music, Rock, Blues, Klezmer, Avant-Garde Contemporary Music, as well as Jazz. The Three Bones are Dan Blacksberg, Frank Rein and Connor Przybyszewski
