Spreading the joy of the season, SEPTAAthenianRazak LLC and Phila Jazz Project present 4 FREE & Cool Holiday Concerts in Suburban Station on Fridays in December. Saxophonist and vocalist, Marion Salaam started off the concert series with an enthusiastic display of Bebop wizardry and holiday cheer.

 

Marion Salaam is a vocalist and alto saxophonist, who is a multi-talented master of the Philadelphia Bebop tradition. Marion has performed at the West Oak Lane Jazz Festival, PJP's Philadelphia Song Book and Chester Arts Alive! at Andre’ Café’ Acoustique. A truly high-energy performer, Salaam brings the traditions of Charlie Parker and Al Jarreau to life in a truly magical way.

Salaam was joined by his quartet featuring Bernard Samuel - piano, Kenny Davis - bass and Greg McDonald - drums. The session was recorded by Chris Andrew McDonald and photographed by Tim Blackwell. Special thanks to Julia Lopez for assistance.

Shamika ByrdShamika Byrd is singer and actress with an astounding vocal range and a knack for fusing Gospel music and Jazz. Shamika began her career singing gospel on her grandmother’s bus trips. She has performed at the Venice Island Performing Arts Center, Welcome America Festival at Penns Landing, Berks Jazz Festival, Lancaster Avenue Jazz Festival, the Kimmel Center, Chris’ Jazz Café, Firehouse Café and other venues.
