Welcome to Philadelphia Jazz Project
Price | Diehl |Sunkett - Live At Katherine Drexel Library
Mar 6, 2019
As part of Jazz Appreciation Month, during April of 2017, PJP collaborated with Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy to present four special concerts in various public spaces around the city. These concerts were presented at facilities under the auspices of the Free Library of Philadelphia and Parks & Recreation.
We selected four ensembles who are quite different from each other and demonstrate the broad and diverse possibilities of contemporary Jazz music. This particular concert was captured in audio and we share it with you here now, as a FREE mixtape download.

Kevin Diehl is a Philadelphia-based drummer, percussionist and composer. He cut his teeth on the 1970s New York City Loft Jazz scene. There, he worked and studied Afro-Cuban drumming with Jerry Gonzalez. Returning to Philly, Diehl worked with Tyrone Hill and studied Bata drumming and Lukumi music with Nichola Rivera, becoming a member of Rivera’s Lukumi group, “Ochan La Ocha.” In 2000, Diehl formed Sonic Liberation Front (SLF). The ensemble realizes the parallels between Lukumi song composition and that of Jazz musicians. SLF has worked with Marshall Allen, Odean Pope, Billy Bang, Kahil El Zabar, Sunny Murray, Michelle Rosewoman, Thurman Barker, and Chad Taylor. SLF has toured festivals throughout North America and won critical acclaim for their five albums.
