Shamika Byrd

Live At Suburban Station

Friday, December 8th, 2017

Spreading the joy of the season, SEPTAAthenianRazak LLC and Phila Jazz Project present 4 FREE & Cool Holiday Concerts in Suburban Station on Fridays in December. Actress and vocalist, Shamika Byrd continued the concert series with a soothing and soulful mix of holiday cheer and funky reflections.

Shamika Byrd is a classically trained vocalist, actress and producer, who began her career singing gospel on her grandmother’s bus trips. She is a graduate of Eastern University and toured Europe, singing Gospel and Negro spirituals to sold out crowds. It is the synthesis of traditional Gospel music, with her Classical music training that ultimately converge in Jazz, which fuels Shamika Byrd's creativity. She has performed at the Venice Island Performing Arts Center, Welcome America Festival at Penns Landing, Berks Jazz Festival, Lancaster Avenue Jazz Festival, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Chris’ Jazz Café, Firehouse Café and other venues.

Philly Jazz Quotes

The stuff McCoy Tyner did was earth-shattering for me. The modal thing, the way he voiced chords in fourths, the way he used the pentatonic scale -- all those things were very new.
