Coltrane 2017 Celebration In The Making
Aug 8, 2017
"God breathes through us so completely... so gently we hardly feel it... yet, it is our everything." —— John Coltrane
On September 23rd 2016, we Philadelphians celebrated the 90th birthday of John Coltrane: One of America’s greatest artists and our neighbor. Philadelphia Jazz Project in collaboration with Temple University Libraries, WRTI 90.1FM, PhillyCAM, Jazz Near You and other partners came together in unity and celebrated John Coltrane's birthday with 9 days of FREE events: Concerts, Screenings, Dialogues and Exhibitions.
We featured artists like Azar Lawrence, Douglas Ewart, James Carter, Sonny Fortune and Billy Harper, as well as Suzanne Burgess, Michael Andrews, Lauren Lark and Paul Jost. We presented events in venues such as the historic Hatfield House, New Barber's Hall and the Church of the Advocate. We also screened works by Scribe Video Center and The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia.
Well, it’s a new year and we are preparing a new celebration. It will take place between September 18th and September 24th, 2017. Another multi-day birthday celebration for John Coltrane is in the works. Details are forthcoming, but at present, we are seeking volunteers and sponsors. If you, a friend, or family member would like to help Philadelphia celebrate John Coltrane, please reach out to us at info@philajazzproject.org, or at 267-259-3802.
