WOWS New Season 2015-16

WOWS2

“Music is an idea, not a style!” - Ornette Coleman

This Fall, the Warriors of the Wonderful Sound return their midweek concert series at the Painted Bride Art Center, that began in the spring of 2015 and featured their amazing big band “Bobby Zankel and the Warriors of the Wonderful Sound with guest soloists Dave Burrell, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Don Byron, and Jaleel Shaw. That spring series (half of which was presented at the Clef Club) proved that Philadelphians will come out to hear great music whenever it is presented.

They open their fall season on October 13th with a special collaboration with the innovative, hip hop choreographer/dancer, Raphael Xavier and features Philadelphia’s national Jazz treasure Odean Pope, as special guest soloist.

On November 4th, their guest soloist will be the multi-dimensional Guggenheim Fellow, saxophonist, Oliver Lake. On December 2nd, they present the music’s future: the brilliant unlimited Doris Duke Fellow, saxophonist, Steve Lehman.

Philly Jazz Quotes

The stuff McCoy Tyner did was earth-shattering for me. The modal thing, the way he voiced chords in fourths, the way he used the pentatonic scale -- all those things were very new.
