Welcome to Philadelphia Jazz Project
CALL - A Special CD Project
Sep 25, 2022
In early 2021, after the flames of the George Floyd murder and protests traveled around the globe, Kim Niemela, executive director of COSACOSA art at large, Inc. reached out to ask if Philadelphia Jazz Project would have an interest in participating in a new recording project. A NEA-funded project focused on the creation and sharing of new protest music. This project would take the form of an audio CD and be entitled, CALL. It would also feature other talented Philadelphia artists like Jay Fluellen, Keisha Hutchins, Namarah, Victor Rodriguez, Jr., Venissa Santi and Cassendre Xavier.
We reached out the longtime PJP collaborator and songwriter, James Solomon to explore the possibility of working on this interesting project. After a number of discussions, we would offer up two songs: "Captivity" and "STPP (School-to-Prison Pipeline)" both, with music & lyrics written by James Solomon & Homer Jackson.
These songs would also feature superb performances by vocalists Bethlehem, Waverly Alston and V. Shanye Frederick, as well as the beautiful musical support of Veronica Jurkiewicz of Bismuth Quartet - violin, Jocko MacNelly - bass, guitars & banjo, Matt Engle - bass, Adam Faulk - piano & organ and Malik Henry - drums.
Due to the COVID 19 Pandemic, this music was graciously recorded by the instrumentalists in their own home studios and engineered by the artists themselves. This rare occurrence spoke to the commitment and passion that these artists invested into this project.
We are proud to be represented with the artists on this project and more excited, once again by what Philadelphia artists are capable of doing when given the space, time and resources to make magic happen.
