Welcome to Philadelphia Jazz Project
Summer Sounds 2018 - Victor North Mixtape
May 8, 2020
During the summer of 2018, in partnership with VISIT PHILADELPHIA, the Philadelphia Jazz Project, presented 90 FREE performances in 45 days in Philadelphia's, historic Old City District. From Friday, June 1 through Friday, September 7, 2018, five different Philadelphia musical ensembles, each presented concerts for three weeks. Back in the golden age of Jazz, it was common for a performer to be based in a restaurant, club or bar for at least a week. There were many situations where bands stayed at a venue for months, like Thelonious Monk’s legendary, six-month residency at The Five Spot in New York City, which also featured the great Philadelphia saxophonist, John Coltrane. Today, these kinds of extended engagements are extremely rare.
We were very fortunate to have this opportunity to both present in our city’s historic district, with it’s hoards of regional, national and international visitors, as well as to have these rare continuous, multi-week, presenting showcases. This allowed the groups to dig deep into the songs that they were performing and to become more creative and frisky with the music. Most important, it helped them to truly gel as a collective of performers, all thinking and feeling as one; yet still maintaining and illuminating their own, individual voice. Luckily for all of us, we recorded some of this great music and we can continue to enjoy it today through this series of six FREE mixtapes.
